A well-maintained garment lasts 3 to 5 times longer. Here are the best practices by type of piece.
Qamis in Japanese Fabric (Toyobo)
- Washing: machine wash at 30°C, delicate cycle, inside out. Toyobo fabric withstands frequent washing well.
- Drying: air dry on a hanger. Avoid tumble drying which damages the fibers.
- Ironing: medium temperature, inside out. A light press while the qamis is still damp gives the best result.
- Stain removal: treat immediately with bile soap on greasy stains. Do not rub, blot gently.
Yemeni Turbans (Handwoven)
Handwoven turbans are more delicate than industrial fabrics:
- Hand wash in cold water with mild soap (such as Marseille soap).
- No wringing — simply press the fabric between your hands without twisting.
- Dry flat, do not hang on a hanger as it deforms the weave.
- Natural variations in shade are a characteristic of handwoven fabric — do not try to remove them.
Suede Capes
Suede requires specific care:
- Dry clean only — no machine washing, even cold.
- Regular brushing with a soft brush made for suede to maintain the velvety feel.
- Protection: once per season, apply a waterproofing spray for suede.
- Stains: let dry then brush in the direction of the nap. For persistent stains, take to the dry cleaner.
Waterproof Sets (Khalifa II)
- Washing: machine wash at 30°C, delicate cycle, no fabric softener (softener reduces the effectiveness of the water-repellent treatment).
- Drying: air dry only.
- No direct ironing on the fabric — use a damp cloth or iron inside out at low temperature.
Sweaters (Jabal cotton-acrylic)
- Washing: machine wash at 30°C, wool or delicate cycle.
- Drying: flat, never on a hanger — the weight of the water deforms the collar and sleeves.
- Ironing: rarely necessary, the fabric is wrinkle-resistant. If needed, low temperature with a damp cloth.
Accessories (chachias, ghutras)
- Chachias: hand wash, cold water, dry flat.
- Cotton ghutras: machine wash at 30°C, steam ironing to restore shape.
Errors to Avoid Absolutely
- Tumble drying natural cotton or handwoven fabrics.
- Bleach on white garments (it yellows the fabric over time).
- Storing damp clothes (mold guaranteed).
- Using too much detergent — it leaves residues that dull colors.
